Our Young & Free initiative has been going for one year as of October 1! It has been such a positive program that we are all very proud of. Our 2008 Y&F Spokesperson, Larissa Walkiw, did a fantastic job and has now headed to university.

We are now into the public voting phase in our search for Larissa's replacement. The three finalists for 2009 Young & Free Alberta Spokesperson are:

Oprah's "Big Give"

So, who watched “Oprah’s Big Give”? The finale was last week, and it was a phenomenon that sure caught on. A reality show based on “outgiving” your competitors. The prize? Simply the privilege of being named "the biggest giver”. No money. None. At least not that the contestants knew about until after the final competition. The BIG GIVE winner unsuspectingly received one million dollars – $500,000 for them personally, and $500,000 to “give big” one last time. What a great idea!

Finally…a reality show in which someone wins money for doing good or caring for others, not for deceiving others or dishonouring commitments. A subsequent Oprah show highlighted how people all over America were giving big, including a 5 year old boy who, when asked what he wanted for his birthday, said he already had enough toys – instead of keeping the gifts he would receive at his birthday party, he wanted to give them away to kids in need (click link for full details - Little Drew's Big Give). Wow, what we can learn from children without bias, prejudice and years of learned behaviour.

At CWCU, we established a caring company by “giving big”, both financially and through volunteer hours generously offered by our staff. Last year, CWCU donated over $500,000 to the communities we serve, and gave away another $60,000 in promotional items used to help various groups and organizations with their special fundraising community events. CWCU is privileged to serve our communities and demonstrates a commitment to building caring communities at every opportunity. In fact, as just one example, our staff at various branches are currently fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society’s annual “Relay for Life”. CWCU and our staff have been huge supporters of this event over the past years and this year is no exception.

So, we know we are giving big. Are you keeping up in your communities both through your workplace and individual activities? Let us know what you’re doing in your community to GIVE BIG. Just like the show motto said, “you gotta GIVE BIG OR GO HOME”!!!!
